Craft beer in Quebec: microbreweries and good addresses at Carrera Café
The Quebec craft scene is one of the richest in Canada. Local hops, wild brews, amber ales, Quebec microbreweries turn heads. Your gourmet pit stop: the bar at Carrera Café, in Petit-Champlain.
The Craft Scene
Quebec and craft beer
Since the 2000s, Quebec has become one of the world capitals of the craft movement. More than 200 microbreweries in Quebec, including about a dozen in the city region.
A movement born in basements
It all started with a few enthusiasts and stainless steel tanks in garages. Today, Quebec artisanal brewing is exported worldwide. Quebec brews as much as it dreams: boldly, originally, and with a distinctly northern sense of humor.
Quebec in the lead pack
The city of Quebec concentrates several must-visit addresses within a 20-minute radius. Old Quebec, Lower Town, and Saint-Roch host modern tasting rooms, intimate tap rooms, and hop-focused festivals.
Microbreweries
Addresses not to miss
Here are some microbreweries from the Quebec City area that are benchmarks in the craft scene. Tasting circuits not to be missed.
La Barberie
Worker cooperative, pioneers of the craft movement in Quebec since 1997. Seasonal brews and characterful ales, just steps from the Old Port.
Brewbaker
Microbrewery in Saint-Roch with a varied offer and experimental brews. One of the meeting places in Quebec's boho-creative neighborhood.
Corsaire Microbrewer
Originally in Pintendre, now available on shelves throughout Quebec. Their IPAs and summer bitters are classics of the warm season.
Pit Caribou
Born in Gaspésie but very present in Quebec City. Their ales with seaweed and marine plants are unique in the world. A brewed terroir.
The Styles
What to drink in Quebec
Each season dictates its style. Winter calls for velvety stouts, summer for light wit & biers, spring for fruity bocks. A four-step circuit.
Cold season Imperial Stout
Deep black robe, aromas of roasted coffee and bitter chocolate. A style to be sipped slowly, near a fireplace. At Carrera Café, it is paired with a board of aged Quebec cheeses.
Wit & Saison
Light brews, Belgian heritage. Effervescent and thirst-quenching, perfect with a Charlevoix charcuterie board on the terrace.
Vermont Style IPA
The star of the global craft scene. In Quebec, several breweries produce juicy and aromatic IPAs in limited fall editions.
Beer Pairings
Well-chosen boards and glasses
Craft beer pairs wonderfully with tasting boards. Here are our favorite pairings at Carrera Café, designed like perfect turns.
Imperial stout & aged cheese
The roasted bitterness of the stout envelops the richness of aged sheep cheese. A pole position marriage, reserved for discerning palates.
Floral IPA & Charlevoix charcuterie
The tropical notes of the IPA contrast with the salty richness of the snow ham. A pairing that awakens all the senses.
