Craft Beer in Quebec City: Microbreweries and Best Spots at Carrera Café
Quebec City's craft scene is one of the richest in Canada. Local hops, wild brews, amber ales - Quebec City's microbreweries are turning heads. Your gourmet pit stop: the Carrera Café drinkery, in Petit-Champlain.
The Craft Scene
Quebec City and craft beer
Since the 2000s, Quebec City has become one of the world's capitals of the craft movement. More than 200 microbreweries in Quebec, including a dozen in the city region.
A movement born in basements
It all started with a few enthusiasts and stainless steel tanks in garages. Today, Quebec's craft brewing is exported worldwide. Quebec brews as much as it dreams: with audacity, originality and a touch of northern humor.
Quebec City in the lead
Quebec City has several essential addresses within a 20-minute radius. Old Quebec, Lower Town and Saint-Roch host modern tasting rooms, intimate tap rooms and hop-dedicated festivals.
Microbreweries
The addresses not to miss
Here are some microbreweries in the Quebec City region that are references in the craft world. Tasting tours not to be missed.
La Barberie
Worker cooperative, pioneers of the craft movement in Quebec City since 1997. Seasonal brews and characterful ales, just steps from the Old Port.
Brewbaker
Saint-Roch microbrewery with a varied offer and experimental brews. One of the meeting places of Quebec City's boho-creative district.
Corsaire Microbrasseur
First in Pintendre, now available on shelves all over Quebec. Their IPAs and summer bitters are classics of the warm season.
Pit Caribou
Born in Gaspésie but very present in Quebec City. Their seaweed and marine plant ales are unique in the world. A brewed terroir.
The Styles
What's being drunk in Quebec City
Each season dictates its style. Winter calls for velvety stouts, summer for light witbiers, spring for fruity bocks. A four-part circuit.
Seasonal Imperial Stout
Deep black color, aromas of roasted coffee and bitter chocolate. A style to be savored slowly, by a fireplace. At Carrera Café, it's accompanied by a platter of aged Quebec cheeses.
Wit & Saison
Light brews, Belgian heritage. Effervescent and refreshing, perfect with a Charlevoix charcuterie board on the terrace.
Vermont Style IPA
The star of the global craft scene. In Quebec City, several breweries produce juicy and aromatic IPAs in limited autumn editions.
Beer Pairings
Boards and well-chosen glasses
Craft beer pairs wonderfully with tasting boards. Here are our favorite pairings at Carrera Café, designed as perfect turns.
Imperial stout & aged cheese
The roasted bitterness of the stout envelops the fat of aged sheep's cheese. A pole position pairing, reserved for demanding palates.
Floral IPA & Charlevoix charcuterie
The tropical notes of the IPA contrast with the salty fat of "jambon des neiges." A pairing that awakens all the senses.
★ Barista's Tip
Beer or espresso: the champion's choice
Hesitating between a beer from the drinkery and a specialty espresso? Do both. A small espresso at the beginning of your visit to awaken your senses, then a glass of local beer to accompany your board. That's the winning sequence at the paddock.
