ESPRESSO AND CHECKERED FLAG: COFFEE AND F1

April 2026 · 5 min read · Carrera Café · The Coffee Journal

At first glance, an espresso and a Formula 1 car don’t have much in common. One fits in a 30 ml cup. The other exceeds 300 km/h in a straight line. And yet, when you look closer, the parallels are striking. Precision, timing, complexity hidden behind apparent simplicity – all this connects the two worlds in a way you wouldn’t suspect at first glance.

Precision as a core value

In F1, a few thousandths of a second separate pole position from fifth place. In espresso, a few extra seconds of extraction turn a balanced coffee into a bitter cup. In both cases, precision is not optional: it’s the condition for excellence. F1 engineers adjust the fins by the millimeter. Baristas adjust pressure and grind by the gram. It’s this same quest for accuracy that drives both disciplines.

Technology at the service of pleasure

A modern espresso machine is a masterpiece of engineering: precise temperature control within 0.1°C, pressure regulated by the bar, programmable extraction profiles. A F1 car is also a technological feat: computer-calculated aerodynamics, seven-speed transmissions in 50 milliseconds, energy recovery systems. In both cases, technology serves to push the limits of what’s possible to offer an exceptional experience.

The human factor: unavoidable and decisive

Despite all the technology, the human factor remains decisive in both fields. The driver who chooses the right moment to attack, who senses the car’s limits on a wet track, who keeps a cool head under pressure – no algorithm can replace that. Similarly, the barista who adjusts their technique according to the day’s beans, ambient humidity, customer feedback – this human sensitivity is irreplaceable. It’s human talent that turns a good car into a champion.

Carrera Café: where the two worlds meet

Our name is no coincidence. Carrera, in Spanish, means race. We have always wanted to create a coffee that embodies this energy – precision, passion, excellence in the details. Every cup we prepare at Petit Champlain is the result of this same mindset: going beyond the ordinary to reach the exceptional. It’s our way of paying tribute to Formula 1 and the culture of performance that drives it.
