Le Mans 1966: Ford vs Ferrari, the war that changed car racing

There are races that are simply races. And there are others that are wars. Le Mans 1966 belongs to the second category, and the way it ended became one of the most discussed images in motorsport history.

How Henry Ford II declared war on Enzo Ferrari

It all started in 1963. Ford wanted to buy Ferrari. Negotiations progressed. Enzo Ferrari seemed ready. Then, at the last moment, he withdrew. He could not accept the clause that would remove control of the racing division.

Henry Ford II took it badly. Very badly. He reportedly said these words, or something equivalent: "We're going to beat that bastard at Le Mans." This was the starting point of one of the most ambitious and costly racing programs ever undertaken by an automaker.

Ford hired engineers, technicians, drivers. The GT40 was developed intensively. The first attempts in 1964 and 1965 failed. Ferrari dominated. But Ford learned.

1966: the moment of truth

Le Mans 1966. Ford arrives with an armada of GT40 Mk II prepared by Shelby American. The drivers include Bruce McLaren, Ken Miles, Dan Gurney, A.J. Foyt. Ferrari is there, still the favorite. But that night, Ford was unstoppable.

The Ford GT40s dominated the race from start to finish. Approaching the finish line, the top three places were all occupied by Fords. It was at this moment that Ford management made a decision that would fuel debates for decades.

The controversy of the finish

Ken Miles, who had led most of the race, was asked to slow down to allow a grouped finish. The victory photo with three Fords side by side is the image Ford wanted. Miles agreed. But the Le Mans rule on distance covered meant that Bruce McLaren was declared the winner, not Miles.

Ken Miles almost achieved something unique in Le Mans history: winning the 24 Hours after winning Daytona and Sebring the same year. This triple crown was denied to him by his own team.
