The history of the Petit-Champlain neighborhood: the oldest commercial district in North America

Petit-Champlain is much more than a picturesque neighborhood. It is one of the most historically rich places in North America. And Carrera Café has made its home there, proud to be part of this living history.

History since 1608

Four centuries of urban life

Samuel de Champlain founded Quebec in 1608, at the foot of Cap Diamant, in what would become the Lower Town. Petit-Champlain is one of the first commercial neighborhoods to develop: furriers, merchants, artisans settled there from the colony's earliest decades.

For nearly three centuries, the neighborhood has experienced a turbulent history: fires, the English conquest of 1759, reconstruction, industrial decline in the 19th century. But its stones remain. And they tell everything.

When you walk on these cobblestones, you walk on four centuries of North American history.

The architecture

4 centuries of stone and wood

The architecture of Petit-Champlain is a living historical document. The limestone houses with tin roofs, colorful facades, wooden exterior stairs: each element tells a story of an era, a climatic constraint, a style.

The Renaissance

The 80s and the revival

In the 1970s-80s, Petit-Champlain was a neglected, almost abandoned neighborhood. A handful of visionary artists, artisans, and entrepreneurs took the risk to renovate buildings, open shops, and invite life into these forgotten alleys.

The bet has been won beyond all expectations. Today, Petit-Champlain is one of the most visited neighborhoods in Canada. And it has kept its artisanal and intimate soul, against all tourist odds.

Today

The lively neighborhood

Today's Petit-Champlain is a rare balance: touristy without being artificial, lively without being closed off. Neighborhood residents mingle with visitors from around the world. Local artisans work alongside souvenir shops. Quality restaurants and cafés set the tone.

Carrera Café in Petit-Champlain

A new chapter in the neighborhood's history

Settling in Petit-Champlain means taking responsibility for history. Carrera Café understood this from day one. Our establishment does more than sell coffee: it helps keep alive the artisanal and quality culture that saved this neighborhood in the 1980s.

Every espresso pulled, every platter served, every cocktail prepared within our walls adds a small note to this collective story. We are proud of it.
