Quebec’s Science Museums
Quebec is a city of history, certainly. But it is also a city of science, discovery, and curiosity. From the Quebec Aquarium to the Capital Observatory, through the Museum of Civilization: science has found its finest showcases in the capital. And Carrera Café is the perfect paddock to recharge your curiosity after every discovery.
Science and Discoveries
Quebec, capital of curiosity
Quebec’s scientific tradition is deep. Founded on exploring territories, understanding natural phenomena, and passing on knowledge, the city has maintained an intimate relationship with knowledge and discovery since its origins.
Quebec was founded by explorers. Samuel de Champlain, cartographer and navigator, chose this site precisely for its exceptional strategic and geographic qualities. This exploratory spirit remains embedded in the city’s DNA: Quebec has always had a desire to understand the world around it.
Today, this scientific tradition is expressed through a constellation of remarkable institutions: museums, research centers, renowned universities, an aquarium, and observatories that make Quebec a leading scientific and cultural destination in Canada.
For families as well as curious individuals, Quebec's science museums offer immersive and educational experiences of exceptional quality. You don’t just go there to learn: you go to be amazed, to question, and to leave with the feeling that the world is bigger and more fascinating than you thought when you arrived.
The Quebec Aquarium
The Saint Lawrence beneath the surface
Founded in 1959 and fully renovated, the Quebec Aquarium is one of the most comprehensive aquariums in Canada. Its 10,000 animals, Arctic species, and exhibits on the Saint Lawrence ecosystems make it a must-visit.
Walruses and Seals
The iconic attraction of the Quebec Aquarium: walruses and gray seals swimming in open-air outdoor pools. The swimming shows, guided feeding sessions, and the chance to see these marine mammals up close make it a favorite experience for children and adults.
Polar Bears
The Quebec Aquarium hosts polar bears in a reconstructed environment reminiscent of the Arctic expanses. Watching these white giants swim in their glass basin from the inside is a striking experience that brings visitors closer to the threatened species of the Canadian Far North.
Saint Lawrence ecosystems
The large aquatic galleries of the Aquarium dedicated to the Saint Lawrence immerse the visitor in the river's different ecosystems: fresh water, brackish water, salt water. Extremely rare species coexist with common fish in reconstructions of natural habitats with exemplary scientific precision.
All-Season Outdoor Park
The Quebec Aquarium also offers a large outdoor park with four-season attractions: water games in summer, slides in winter, wildlife discovery circuits all year round. A scientific leisure complex to visit and revisit each season with renewed pleasure.
The Observatory of the Capital
Quebec seen from the sky
On the 31st floor of the Marie-Guyart building, the Observatory of the Capital offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the Quebec region. An experience that turns geography into a spectacle and science into vertigo.
The Observatory of the Capital, located at the top of the Marie-Guyart building on Grande-Allée, is the highest public lookout in Quebec. At 221 meters altitude, the panoramic view encompasses Old Quebec, the Saint Lawrence, Orléans Island, the Laurentians to the north, and the Appalachians to the south. A living geographical map within sight.
Telescopes and binoculars are available for visitors who wish to explore the details of the landscape. Informational panels identify the geographical and historical landmarks visible from the platform, turning the simple view into a true lesson in geography and the history of Quebec territory.
At sunset, the Observatory is one of the most magical places in Quebec. The sky turns red, gold, and purple over the river, the city gradually lights up, and the stars appear above the Laurentians. The great visual circuit of Quebec from the air.
Museum of Civilization
Humanity in all its forms
The Museum of Civilization, founded in 1988 on Quebec's Old Port, is one of the most visited museums in Canada. Its permanent and temporary exhibitions explore the major questions of the human condition with remarkable intelligence and accessibility.
Designed by architect Moshe Safdie, the Museum of Civilization building is itself a work of art. Its integration into the historic fabric of the Old Port, with glass facades and concrete volumes that dialogue with neighboring old houses, makes it a masterpiece of contemporary architecture in the heart of the historic city.
The museum's permanent exhibitions, including the famous exhibition on the First Nations, trace human history with rich documentation and staging that rival the world's greatest museums. The often spectacular temporary exhibitions regularly attract visitors from all over North America.
The French Regime Museum and the Francophone America Museum, also managed within the network of civilization museums, complement the museum offerings in the Old Port area with exhibitions on colonial history and Francophone culture in America.
Exceptional Experiences
Science like nowhere else
Beyond established institutions, Quebec offers unique scientific experiences combining discovery, nature, and wonder in often unexpected and memorable settings.
Astronomy Nights in the Laurentians
One hour from Quebec City, the sparsely populated Laurentians offer night skies of exceptional darkness. Astronomy clubs and specialized guides organize observation evenings with professional telescopes: the Milky Way, nebulae, and star clusters reveal the universe in all its vastness.
The Cap-Diamond Cliffs
The Cap-Diamond cliffs, which rise 98 meters above the Saint Lawrence, are an open geology book spanning millions of years of Earth's history. Geologist guides offer narrated excursions revealing the layers of sedimentary and volcanic rocks that form Quebec's bedrock.
Laval University — Open Campus
Laval University, founded in 1663 (the oldest French-speaking university in North America), regularly opens its laboratories and facilities to the public during open house days. World-renowned researchers work there on topics ranging from medicine to artificial intelligence and environmental sciences.
The Science of Quebec Cold
The cold in Quebec is a science in itself. Local architects have developed adapted construction solutions, engineers have created innovative urban heating systems, and residents have winter life rituals that form a true body of know-how passed down from generation to generation. Quebec's cold genius.
With Family
Science accessible to all
Quebec's scientific museums have made family accessibility a priority. Workshops for children, interactive exhibitions, educational activities: science here is a serious game enjoyed by families with pleasure.
The Aquarium of Quebec offers educational programs for school groups and families that turn the visit into a true scientific adventure. Naturalist guides accompany visitors in discovering species and their behaviors with remarkable pedagogy.
The Museum of Civilization has developed an exemplary family offer: educational play areas, creative workshops, storytelling visits, and exhibitions designed for young visitors from 3 years old. Every visit, even for the little ones, is an opportunity to awaken curiosity and a love of knowledge.
After a day of scientific discoveries, Carrera Café is the ideal gourmet stop: our Petit-Champlain terrace welcomes tired but amazed families with local boards, fresh juices, and exceptional coffees for parents who need to recharge their own batteries before answering the inevitable question: "Why?"
★ Barista Tip
The Chemistry of the Perfect Coffee
Coffee is also a science. Extracting the perfect espresso is a matter of chemistry, physics, and precision: water temperature at 93°C, pressure at 9 bars, extraction time between 25 and 30 seconds. Our barista masters these variables with the rigor of a researcher and the passion of a craftsman. At Carrera Café, every Espresso Pole Position is the result of a carefully solved equation. After a visit to the Aquarium or the Observatory, come discuss the science of coffee with our team: we love sharing our knowledge as much as our drinks.
★ The Barista Lab
The Science of Good Coffee
After a day of discoveries at the Aquarium, the Observatory, or the Museum of Civilization, the Carrera Café in Petit-Champlain is the perfect scientific stop. We practice the science of exceptional coffee daily: espresso, latte, cold brew, each preparation is a rigorous and delicious experience.
