Porsche, Ferrari, Carrera: the story of a name that unites speed and coffee

April 2026 · 5 min · Carrera Café · The Coffee Journal

Carrera. One word, yet it simultaneously evokes the curve of an Andean pass, the straight line of a legendary track, and the smell of a freshly pulled espresso. It is no coincidence that this name has established itself in two worlds as different as car racing and coffee culture. It is the story of a word that has crossed continents and decades to become a universal symbol of intensity, precision, and pleasure.

Carrera: a legendary race in the Andes

It all began in 1950, on the winding roads of Venezuela. The Carrera Panamericana is one of the most dangerous car races ever organized. 3000 kilometers of open roads crossing mountains, deserts, and jungles, average speeds over 200 km/h on public roads, drivers risking their lives at every turn. The race was so intense, so beautiful, and so deadly that it was banned in 1954, after five editions that marked the history of motorsport.

It is this race that Porsche chose to name its most sporty model after. The Porsche 356 Carrera, launched in 1955, bears the name of the race it dominated. The tradition continues: 911 Carrera, Boxster, Cayenne... For Porsche, Carrera is not just a model name. It is a philosophy, a promise of pure performance.

Ferrari and the myth of racing

Ferrari never used the name Carrera, but the Italian brand shares with it the same obsession with speed and perfection. The story of Ferrari is the story of a man who wanted to go faster, further, higher, no matter the consequences.

Coffee as a metaphor for racing

What does coffee have to do with all this? Much more than you think. Specialty coffee, like car racing, is a quest for extreme excellence. The roaster seeking the perfect roast profile is like the mechanic tuning the carburetor of a 911 for a race: every adjustment counts, every degree of temperature, every second of roasting changes the result.

At Carrera Café, the name was not chosen by chance. It reflects our philosophy: coffee as a sport, precision as a value, intensity as an experience. Every cup is a race against mediocrity. Every espresso extraction is a full-throttle straight, a curve to master, a finish to celebrate.

The name that brings two worlds together

When you drink an espresso at Carrera Café, you take part in this tradition. You are part of a story that begins on the dusty roads of Venezuela in 1950, passes through the circuits of Monza and Spa, and arrives at Petit-Champlain, where we prepare your coffee with the same precision as a mechanic prepares a race car.

The Carrera Panamericana today

The race was relaunched in 1988 as a regularity rally. Vintage cars of all brands, crews from around the world, the same Andean roads: the spirit of the original is intact. The legend continues.

And at Carrera Café, we keep going too. A coffee, a cup, a story to tell. The race is never over.

Come experience the Carrera intensity

In the heart of Petit-Champlain, Carrera Café prepares each espresso with the precision of a race mechanic. Discover our story in your cup.
