Charlevoix Road Trip: An unforgettable getaway from Quebec City
April 2026 · 4 min · Carrera Café · The Coffee Journal
An hour's drive from Quebec City, Charlevoix is one of Quebec's most spectacular regions. River, mountains, picturesque villages, local gastronomy, and outdoor art: this destination concentrates all the richness of rural Quebec. Before hitting the road, stop at Carrera Café for a morning espresso that will keep you going until you reach the first panoramic views of the Saint Lawrence River.
Preparing for your departure: why start in Petit Champlain
The ideal departure for Charlevoix begins in Old Quebec. Petit Champlain offers you a starting point rich in history and character before leaving the city. Our suggestion: a double espresso or a filter coffee to go at Carrera Café, some provisions for the road, and your mind already turning towards cliffs and whales.
From Petit Champlain, take Boulevard Champlain east, then follow Route 138 along the river. The first few kilometers already offer views of the Saint Lawrence that make you want to stop the car every five minutes. Resist — the best panoramic views await you further on, on the winding roads overlooking Petite-Rivière-Saint-François and Baie-Saint-Paul.
Baie-Saint-Paul: a mandatory first stop
Baie-Saint-Paul is about 90 kilometers from Quebec City, and it's where the road trip really hits its stride. The town is known for its art galleries, artisans, local gastronomy, and extraordinary views of the river. Stroll along Rue Saint-Jean, taste local products, and breathe in the regional air. After Baie-Saint-Paul, the road continues towards La Malbaie and, if you dare, on to Tadoussac for the whales.
