Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Quebec City: The National Holiday at the Heart of the City
On June 24th, Quebec City ignites. Bonfires, concerts, joyful crowds on the Plains of Abraham. Saint-Jean is the most beautiful celebration of the Quebecois spirit, and Carrera Cafe invites you to experience it to the fullest.
History
The Nation's Holiday
Saint-Jean-Baptiste has been celebrated in Quebec since 1834. What was originally a religious holiday has become, over the decades, the living symbol of Quebecois identity.
1834: The Kick-off
It was Ludger Duvernay, printer and patriot, who organized the first Saint-Jean banquet in Montreal in 1834. The idea quickly spread to Quebec City, where the celebration took on unprecedented popular and national significance.
From Religion to Culture
Initially marked by religious processions in honor of Saint John the Baptist, the holiday gradually became secularized. Today, it primarily celebrates the French language, culture, and Quebecois solidarity.
