Slow Morning
In a world that rushes from the moment you wake up, the slow morning is an act of resistance. Not an Instagram trend. A deliberate choice to start the day at your own pace, with a carefully prepared cup as the first conscious gesture.
What is a slow morning
The slow morning is the decision not to open your phone for at least 30 minutes after waking. Not to rush. To give your body and mind time to start naturally, without the immediate demands of the digital world.
Coffee plays a central role. Not as fuel to be consumed quickly, but as a transition ritual between sleep and wakefulness. The preparation itself—measuring, brewing, waiting—becomes a form of active meditation that sets the tone for the day.
The perfect morning sequence
Natural light if possible. No harsh alarm. The body has its own clock. Give it time to return to the world at its own pace.
Kettle on the stove. Grind the coffee by hand with a manual grinder. The sound and resistance of the bean under the handle, a grounding, almost meditative sensation.
V60, Chemex, French Press — no matter the method. What matters is the attention given to every gesture. Pour the water slowly. Watch the coffee foam that forms during the bloom.
Sitting or standing by the window, in the garden or on the balcony. Nowhere else. The cup as the only object of attention for at least 10 minutes. Truly taste.
No task list. Just an intention for the day. One thing you want to move forward on. Set mentally, not written. Coffee seals it.
Which coffee for the slow morning
Floral and fruity. The bright acidity gradually awakens the senses. Ideal to accompany morning contemplation.
Rounder and more enveloping. Notes of caramel and hazelnut for those who prefer a gentler, warmer awakening.
V60, Chemex, Kalita Wave. The slowness of the process is part of the ritual. Espresso is excellent but less conducive to meditation.
Scarcity creates value. A single well-prepared and fully savored cup is better than a half-drunk pot of coffee distractedly consumed.
Why it works
The first minutes after waking are crucial for the day's cognitive state. The cortisol naturally secreted upon waking peaks between 20 and 30 minutes after awakening. Drinking coffee immediately at the alarm is therefore consuming it at the wrong time.
Waiting 30 to 45 minutes, preparing mentally, carefully making your coffee, then consuming it at the right moment in your cortisol cycle: this is what the slow morning instinctively offers. The caffeine then works in synergy with the body rather than in opposition.
