TAG Heuer and Formula 1: fifty years of a relationship that redefines time
April 2026 · 6 min read · Carrera Café · The Coffee Journal
In motor racing, time is everything. A tenth of a second separates pole position from fifth place. One second too long in the pits changes the outcome of a race. And for decades, one brand has measured this time with a precision that the rest of the watch industry watches with respect: TAG Heuer.
The relationship between TAG Heuer and Formula 1 is not just a logo partnership on a car. It is a story of shared values, shared precision, and a culture of performance that dates back to a time when watches were still racing instruments before becoming objects of desire.
Heuer before TAG: the origins of an obsession with precision
Before becoming TAG Heuer in 1985, the company was simply called Heuer. Founded in 1860 in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, by Edouard Heuer, it developed expertise in sports timekeeping from its earliest decades.
In 1916, Heuer patented the Mikrograph, a chronograph capable of measuring to the hundredth of a second. It was a revolution for the time. Motor sports, athletics, swimming: wherever precise timing mattered, Heuer was present.
In 1962, the Heuer chronograph went to space with John Glenn aboard the Friendship 7 spacecraft. In 1969, Steve McQueen wore a Heuer Monaco on his wrist in the film Le Mans. This was not an ordinary product placement. It was a natural convergence between a performance aesthetic and a culture of embraced risk.
The Monaco: the icon that changed everything
The TAG Heuer Monaco, launched in 1969, is one of the most iconic watches in the history of sports watchmaking. It is the first automatic chronograph watch with a square case. And it bears the name of the most legendary Formula 1 circuit.
The Red Bull era and the return to the forefront
In 2016, TAG Heuer became the title partner of Red Bull Racing. The logo appeared on the Red Bull RB12, then on all subsequent generations. The association with Max Verstappen, multiple world champion, gave the brand top visibility among a new generation of enthusiasts.
It's not just about visibility. It's about consistency. TAG Heuer and Red Bull share the same culture of precision pushed to the extreme, the same approach to every tenth of a second as a territory to conquer.
What TAG Heuer says about the wearer
At Carrera Café, these values are familiar. The name itself comes from a car. The visual identity is built around precision and performance. And the people who gather there often share these same references.
Maybe that's why the conversation about TAG Heuer naturally takes place here, over an espresso, between two people wearing the same watches on their wrists.
