Petit Champlain Terrace: where to sit outside in Old Quebec

Sitting outside in Old Quebec: the art of choosing the right terrace

The search "terrace Old Quebec" is one of the most typed by visitors planning their stay in Quebec City. And we understand them. A terrace in Old Quebec is no ordinary thing: it’s a complete visual and atmospheric experience. The cobblestone streets in front of you, the fieldstone facades, passersby strolling, sometimes the music of a street artist a few meters away. Choosing where to sit outside in Petit Champlain is almost as important as what you’re going to drink or eat.

The Carrera Café terrace: motorsport and Old Quebec

At Carrera Café, the terrace is the natural extension of the indoor space. A few tables outside, close enough to the street to see the neighborhood come alive, but arranged well enough so you can linger without feeling in the way. In summer, this is where most of our customers settle for an iced espresso, a matcha latte, or a cold brew.

What we appreciate about our terrace: the afternoon sunshine, the street activity without excessive noise, and the proximity to the rest of Petit Champlain which allows you to start exploring as soon as you're ready. It's a terrace for people who want to be in the neighborhood, not just next to it.

The best times for a terrace at Petit Champlain

Le Petit Champlain has a light pattern that regulars know well. In the morning, the Lower Town is still in the shadow of the cliffs. Direct light arrives mid-morning depending on the season. The afternoon is the best time for a terrace: the warmth is gentle, the light is beautiful, and the neighborhood is lively without being crowded.

In June and July, evenings allow you to stay outside until almost 9 p.m. In September and October, clear days remain ideal for a terrace until mid-afternoon, with autumn colors in the background. Even in May, the first warm days see Petit Champlain’s terraces fill up with locals who have waited all winter for this.

What to order on the terrace depending on the season

In summer: cold brew on ice, iced matcha latte, or espresso tonic are perfect orders for a warm terrace. Light, refreshing, visually beautiful on the table. In autumn: a flat white or a hot latte in a large mug, accompanied by a board or focaccia. In winter, if the terrace is heated: Carrera Café’s mulled wine is a must, with its spices and warmth contrasting with the cold air outside.

Each season has its terrace drink with us. And each drink has been chosen to work in this space between indoors and outdoors, between the café and the neighborhood.

Reserve or just show up?

Terraces in Petit Champlain are generally not reserved. The neighborhood rule is to arrive, find a free table, and settle in. In high season (July-August), some time slots are more in demand: noon and the afternoon between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. are peak times. Early in the morning or late afternoon, tables are more easily available.

At Carrera Café, we do everything to welcome everyone, both indoors and on the terrace. Come as you are, at the time that suits you. Petit Champlain has this talent for making every moment pleasant, no matter when you arrive.

Come enjoy our terrace
