Quebec’s outdoor terraces
Enjoying summer outdoors
From the first May suns, Quebec transforms. Chairs and parasols invade the sidewalks, the scents of coffee mingle with the sea air of the Saint-Laurent. The terrace of Carrera Café, nestled in Petit-Champlain, is one of the most beautiful stages of this long-awaited Quebec summer.
Terrace culture
A Quebec ritual
In Quebec, the terrace is not a luxury. It’s a collective necessity, a revenge on the Quebec winter.
After six months of cold, the opening of terraces is an almost celebrated event. Quebecers come out as soon as the thermometer passes 10 °C, sometimes still with their coat on. Establishments that anticipate this enthusiasm, with outdoor heaters, cushions, and careful decoration, are rewarded with unmatched loyalty.
The terrace in Quebec is also about the view. The river, the ramparts, the steeples, the cobblestone streets of Old Quebec. Every chair offers a picture. You don’t just go to have a coffee: you settle into a setting.
The culture of taking time prevails. A meal can last two hours, enough time to watch the light change over the Saint-Laurent. The servers know it. The regulars know it. It’s an unspoken contract, a particular Quebec civility.
The districts
Where to settle in Quebec
Each district has its terraces, its atmosphere, its rhythm. A guide to find yours.
Petit-Champlain
The most photogenic district of Quebec. Cobblestone alley, colorful facades, intimate establishments. The terrace of Carrera Café takes center stage with its upscale style and competition-level espresso.
Dufferin Terrace
The historic promenade overlooking the river. Taverns and refreshment stands line the parapet. Unobstructed view of Lévis and the Saint-Laurent, shared by thousands of visitors every summer.
Saint-Roch District
The creative district of Quebec. Modern terraces, craft breweries, specialty cafés. A more urban energy, less touristy. For the curious and locals.
Grande Allée
The avenue of lively terraces in Quebec. Bars, breweries, restaurants in a row. The place for a summer evening that starts early and ends late.
Must-visit terraces
Carrera selection
Our selection of terraces worth the trip, for their view, atmosphere, or menu.
The terrace of Pub Saint-Alexandre in Haute-Ville, with its tables scattered along Saint-Jean street, offers a direct immersion into neighborhood life. Below, the terrace of Hôtel 71 overlooks Place de Paris with a view of the Saint Lawrence that alone justifies the visit.
At the Old Port, several establishments have taken over the docks. The view of the illuminated Quebec Bridge at night, sitting facing the river, is one of the city’s most memorable summer experiences.
On the Plains of Abraham, seasonal kiosks offer drinks and bites. With Cap-Diamant and the Quebec flag fluttering in the wind as a backdrop, the atmosphere is both heritage-rich and relaxed.
Terrace drinks
What we order when the sun beats down
Iced latte, fruity cocktail, craft beer: terrace drinks in Quebec have their own culture.
Carrera iced latte
Double espresso, oat milk, ice cubes. The coffee race: fast, intense, essential. Our flagship version on the Petit-Champlain terrace.
Quebec craft beers
Quebec microbreweries like Archibald, La Barberie, or Le Corsaire offer perfect summer blondes and whites for long terrace afternoons.
Seasonal cocktails
Ice ciders, cocktails with Quebec berries, reinvented Spritz. The summer invites experimentation and bold pairings.
Artisanal lemonade
Pressed lemon, Quebec mint, sparkling water. Simple, refined, refreshing. The go-to non-alcoholic drink for summer terraces.
Terraces and events
The summer that enlivens the city
Quebec Summer Festival, New France Festival, Saint-Jean: the terraces come alive to the rhythm of the events.
The Quebec Summer Festival (July) turns the city into a giant stage. Terraces near the main stages become lively spaces where festival-goers settle between concerts. Carrera Café at Petit-Champlain welcomes an international clientele, coming from everywhere to experience this great cultural gathering.
Saint-Jean Night (June 23) is the national holiday of Quebecers. Terraces stay open until the early hours, fireworks light up the sky, and the whole city sings. A unique, deeply Quebecois atmosphere.
The New France Festival (August) brings period costumes and historic settings to the streets of Old Quebec. The terraces of Petit-Champlain and Place-Royale gain a theatrical dimension. You sip your espresso while watching 17th-century merchants pass by.
