Theaters and Performance Halls in Quebec City

From the monumental Grand Théâtre to the intimate Théâtre Périscope: Quebec City boasts a remarkable cultural infrastructure that puts live arts at the forefront of civic life.

Theater life

A vibrant and diverse scene

Quebec City has more than a dozen active performance venues, with an annual program that rivals major North American cities.

Quebec City's cultural scene is driven by a community of creators from all disciplines: theater, dance, classical music, jazz, cabaret, multidisciplinary performance. Each season, dozens of companies share the stages of a city where the audience is loyal and demanding.

Performance venues are scattered throughout Quebec City's different neighborhoods, from Old Quebec to Saint-Roch, passing through Carré d'Youville and Grande Allée. A dense cultural network that allows you to walk from one venue to another in the same evening.

The large venues

Classical Music

Quebec City, a symphonic city

The Quebec Symphony Orchestra (OSQ) is one of Canada's oldest orchestral ensembles. Its season is an unmissable event.

Founded in 1902, the Orchestre symphonique de Québec performs some forty concerts each year at the Grand Théâtre. Its programming balances classical (Bach, Mozart, Beethoven), romantic (Brahms, Mahler) and contemporary repertoire, with frequent residencies by internationally renowned soloists.

The Opéra de Québec, founded in 1984, stages two or three major productions per season: lyrical operas, prestigious musicals, and aria concerts. Its casts blend established Quebec artists and international talents, often with spectacular staging.

Must-see shows

Artistic events that are major highlights in Quebec City's cultural calendar.

OSQ Season at the Grand Théâtre

Friday night concerts by the Quebec Symphony Orchestra in the Louis-Fréchette hall are an institution. The hall's acoustics, the orchestra's quality, and the audience's engagement make it one of the most intense musical moments in the province.

Quebec City Chamber Music Festival

Every summer, the festival transforms Palais Montcalm into a global gathering for chamber music. From string quartets to solo piano pieces, and mixed programs with contemporary percussion: an exceptional week that attracts music lovers from all over North America.

World Premieres at Théâtre Périscope

Attending the premiere of a contemporary creation at Théâtre Périscope means participating in the history of Quebec theater. A live experience that cannot be broadcast or replicated, and where every evening is unique.

Opera at the Grand Théâtre

Opera de Québec productions are elegant events, where lyrical tradition meets contemporary stage creativity. Absolutely a must-see at least once during a stay in Quebec City.

Barista's Tip

Before a show at the Grand Théâtre or Palais Montcalm, start the evening at Carrera Café, in Petit-Champlain: a ristretto espresso, a light platter, and conversation that whets the appetite for the emotions to come. The grid before the race begins.

Carrera Café

The meeting point before and after

An evening at the theater deserves preparation worthy of the show. And sometimes, an after-party.

The tradition of dinner or coffee before the show is an integral part of the cultural experience. At Carrera Café, just a stone's throw from Old Quebec, we welcome elegant spectators heading to the Grand Théâtre as well as regulars of Théâtre Périscope in casual attire.

Our evening menu offers sharing platters, exceptional coffees, and a few Italian cocktails inspired by the paddock: Negroni Rosso, Spritz Grand Prix, Americano Podium. The countdown before the premiere.
