The theaters and performance halls of Quebec
From the monumental Grand Théâtre to the intimate Théâtre Périscope: Quebec has a remarkable cultural infrastructure that propels the performing arts to the forefront of civic life.
Theatrical life
A vibrant and diverse scene
Quebec has more than a dozen active performance halls, with an annual program that rivals major North American cities.
Quebec's cultural scene is driven by a community of creators from all disciplines: theater, dance, classical music, jazz, cabaret, multidisciplinary performance. Each season, dozens of companies share the stages of a city where the audience is loyal and demanding.
The performance halls are spread across different neighborhoods of Quebec City, from Old Quebec to Saint-Roch, passing through Carré d'Youville and Grande Allée. A dense cultural network that allows walking from one hall to another in the same evening.
The large halls
Architecture and artistic ambition
These large-capacity halls host prestigious national and international productions, with some of the best technical facilities in Canada.
Opened in 1971, the Grand Théâtre de Québec houses two major halls: the Louis-Fréchette hall (1,900 seats) and the Octave-Crémazie hall (640 seats). This is where the Quebec Symphony Orchestra performs its concerts, where the Quebec Opera stages its productions, and where major national tours stop. A must-visit address for any live performance enthusiast.
The Palais Montcalm is the home of chamber music and jazz in Quebec City. Its Raoul-Jobin hall offers exceptional acoustics for small and medium-sized ensembles. The concerts of the Quebec Chamber Music Festival take place here every summer, attracting musicians and music lovers from around the world.
Founded in 1971, Théâtre du Trident is Quebec's oldest professional theater company. Its productions combine classical texts and contemporary creations, with an artistic standard recognized across the country. It shares its space at the Grand Théâtre with other resident companies.
Intimate venues
Neighborhood theater
Quebec's small venues are often where the most exciting discoveries happen: new texts, bold stagings, emerging performers.
Founded in 1983, Théâtre Périscope is a 250-seat venue that has become a reference for creation theater in Quebec. Its programming dares hybrid forms, non-conventional languages, ambitious projects that disrupt the codes of live performance. A must-visit to understand the vitality of contemporary Quebec theater.
Théâtre Premier Acte is dedicated to theatrical rising talent and new dramaturgies. Its seasons are windows open to the next big names on the Quebec stage. A place where artistic risk is valued and where each performance can reveal a breakthrough.
Classical music
Quebec, symphonic city
The Quebec Symphony Orchestra (OSQ) is one of the oldest orchestral ensembles in Canada. Its season is an unmissable event.
Founded in 1902, the Quebec Symphony Orchestra gives about forty concerts each year at the Grand Théâtre. Its programming balances classical repertoire (Bach, Mozart, Beethoven), romantic (Brahms, Mahler), and contemporary, with frequent residencies of internationally renowned soloists.
The Opéra de Québec, founded in 1984, stages two or three major productions per season: lyric operas, prestigious musicals, aria concerts. Its casts mix established Quebec artists and international talents, often in spectacular stagings.
Must-see shows
Artistic events that are part of Quebec's cultural calendar as major events.
Friday night concerts by the Quebec Symphony Orchestra in the Louis-Fréchette hall are an institution. The hall's acoustics, the orchestra's quality, and the audience's engagement make it one of the most intense musical moments in the province.
Every summer, the festival transforms Palais Montcalm into a global meeting place for chamber music. From string quartets to solo piano pieces, including mixed programs with contemporary percussion: an exceptional week attracting music lovers from all over North America.
Attending the premiere of a contemporary creation at Théâtre Périscope means taking part in the history of Quebec theater. A live experience that cannot be broadcast or reproduced, where every evening is unique.
The productions of the Opéra de Québec are formal events where lyrical tradition meets contemporary stage creativity. A must-see at least once during a stay in Quebec.
