The historic district
Two hundred years of history in a unique fortified city in North America. The Upper Town and Lower Town, connected by the funicular, together form one of the most intact historic ensembles on the continent.
The Upper Town
The ramparts, the Citadel, the Dufferin Terrace, and Château Frontenac: the Upper Town concentrates the major heritage sites. A walk along the fortifications offers a panoramic view of the Saint Lawrence and the Laurentians.
The Lower Town
At the foot of the cliffs, the Lower Town houses the Petit-Champlain district, the Old Port, and Place Royale. This is where it all began for Quebec: Samuel de Champlain founded the city here in 1608.
The UNESCO classification
Quebec is the only fortified city in North America north of Mexico to have preserved its ramparts. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985.
Le Petit-Champlain
Street by street, alley by alley
Le Petit-Champlain is the most photogenic street in Quebec. Half-timbered houses, artisan shops, restaurants, and terraces: a neighborhood that has preserved its soul.
Rue du Petit-Champlain
Rue du Petit-Champlain is officially the oldest commercial street in North America. Paved, narrow, about 200 meters long, it is home to artisans, galleries, and restaurants.
The funicular
The Old Quebec funicular has connected the Upper Town and Lower Town since 1879. From the Dufferin terrace, it drops passengers directly onto Rue du Petit-Champlain in less than a minute.
Place Royale
At the end of Rue du Petit-Champlain, Place Royale is the cradle of French civilization in America. The Notre-Dame-des-Victoires church, built in 1688, watches over this historic square.
The ideal pit stop
Why stop at Carrera Café

The day's route
8:30 AM — Carrera Café
First espresso, focaccia from Borderon et Fils, view of the still-sleeping street. The best possible start to the day.
9:30 AM — Rue du Petit-Champlain
Walk along the street before the crowds arrive. The shops open, the cobblestones still shine with dew.
10:30 AM — Funicular and Upper Town
Take the funicular up, stroll on the Dufferin terrace, walk along the ramparts to the Citadel.
12:30 PM — Return to Carrera Café
Charcuterie and cheese board for the lunch break. A glass of red to accompany. The must-stop stand.
2 PM — Place Royale and Old Port
The Notre-Dame-des-Victoires church, the Place-Royale museum, a walk to the edge of the Saint Lawrence.
5 PM — Return to Carrera Café
The golden hour, the sun low on the cobblestones. A Negroni or a latte to end the day beautifully.
For tourists
What the locals won't tell you
Come early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Avoid noon in summer: the streets are crowded. The Casse-Cou staircase from the Upper Town is free and offers a unique view of Petit-Champlain.

How to get there
By car from Montreal: 2h45 via highway 20. From Palais station, Old Quebec is a 10-minute walk. Petit-Champlain is accessible in 20 minutes from Jean-Lesage airport.
When to come
Old Quebec is beautiful in all seasons. Summer for terraces, the Carnival in winter. Spring and autumn offer fewer tourists and more authenticity.
