There are two ways to visit Petit Champlain. The first: arrive with your phone, take photos of the street sloping down to the river, buy a bottle of maple syrup, and leave. The second: understand that this neighborhood is alive, that it has residents, regulars, addresses you won’t find in paper guides.

Start from the bottom

The Casse-Cou Staircase lives up to its name. You go down it slowly. At the bottom, Petit Champlain street opens up. If it’s morning, it’s almost empty. Shopkeepers are opening. A few regulars pass by. A delivery person. A cat on a windowsill. The neighborhood breathes at its natural pace.

It’s at that moment you realize that Petit Champlain is first and foremost a neighborhood, before being an attraction. And it’s at that moment you head down to Carrera Café.

Carrera Café: the essential starting point

First and foremost, a coffee. Not because we need it. Because coffee at Carrera is the gateway to the neighborhood. A cup placed on a terrace table or inside, depending on the season. The morning espresso or latte. And that first observation of the neighborhood from a good seat.

Carrera Café is the headquarters for those in the know. Those who come to Petit Champlain not for souvenirs, but to experience it. The café is their excuse, their ritual, their way to mark the start of a good day.

Addresses that never disappoint

Here are the places locals recommend to those who deserve to know them:

• La Maison Darlington: local clothing and accessories shop, in the neighborhood for generations. You find things here you won’t find anywhere else.
• Les Délices de l'Érable: yes, it’s maple syrup. But not ordinary syrup. The quality found here is worth stopping for.
• Rue sous le Cap: the walk along the foot of Cap Diamant, between the river and the cliff. Few tourists. Lots of reality.
• Dufferin Terrace: a must for the view, but locals go early in the morning, before the groups.

The insiders’ walking itinerary

A two-hour route unlike any other two-hour routes:

• 8:30am: Arrival via the Casse-Cou stairs. Coffee at Carrera Café.
• 9:15am: Stroll along rue du Petit Champlain. Shops gradually open.
• 10am: Rue sous le Cap, heading toward the Old Port.
• 10:45am: Ride back up by the funicular elevator (the other way up, reserved for the return).
• 11:15am: Dufferin Terrace for the view, before the groups arrive.
• 12pm: Return to Carrera Café for one last coffee or an iced latte if the season allows.
