Iced latte in Quebec in summer: our version at Carrera Café in Petit-Champlain
Cold, creamy, intense. The summer drink that never disappoints.
The iced latte has become one of the most ordered drinks in quality cafés during summer. But between a basic iced latte and a well-made iced latte, the difference is considerable. At Carrera Café, we prepare it with the same espresso as our hot lattes and milk chosen for its texture and sweetness. The result: a drink worth slowing down to enjoy.
See the summer menuAn iced latte is a double espresso extracted hot, poured over ice cubes and cold milk. Simple in appearance. Demanding in execution. The quality of the espresso counts twice: when cooled, extraction flaws stand out. There’s no room for approximation.
The iced latte trend has gone through many deviations: syrup, generic plant-based milk, low-quality espresso masked by the cold. At Carrera, we went back to basics: a good espresso, quality milk, and ice cubes. Sometimes the simplest is the best.
Ice cubes first, cold milk next, espresso extracted instantly and poured over. The hot espresso creates a thermal shock with the ice cubes that preserves its aromas. We don’t mix immediately: we let the coffee sink into the milk, create its swirls, then we drink. It’s also a show in the glass.
For an iced latte, the choice of milk is critical. We want milk with enough fat to soften the espresso, but not too much to weigh it down. Whole milk remains our reference. For plant-based options, barista oat milk works well because it emulsifies properly even when cold.
Our recommendation: the plain iced latte, without added syrup. If you like a bit more sweetness, we offer some homemade syrups. For plant-based alternatives, barista oat milk is our choice: it gives a result close to whole milk, with a slight cereal note that complements the espresso well.
Our summer terrace is the perfect place for an iced latte. The Petit-Champlain neighborhood is lively but not overwhelming. The July light is soft in the alley. And the cold glass in your hands, after a walk in Old Quebec under the sun, is exactly what you needed.
Available all summer season, no reservation needed. We recommend coming late morning or early afternoon, before the terrace fills up. It's the best time to settle in and take your time.
