Romantic Weekend in Quebec City from Trois-Rivières

April 2026 · 6 min read · Carrera Café · Season: all seasons

Two hours. That's what separates Trois-Rivières from Old Quebec. Close enough to leave on Friday evening after work. Far enough to truly feel like you're elsewhere. We know this romantic weekend by heart. And we never tire of it.

The secret: don't plan everything. Let the city set the pace.

Departure from Trois-Rivières

Highway 40 East, then 20, then the bridge. Leaving at 5:30 p.m. on a Friday, you'll arrive in Quebec City before 8 p.m. With a bit of luck and light traffic, sometimes before 7:30 p.m.

The city lights up at just the right time. The lights of Château Frontenac reflect in the river. Terraces begin to fill. The weekend starts exactly as it should.

Friday evening in Quebec City

Settle into your accommodation, change, and walk down to Old Quebec. The Petit Champlain district is perfect for a night stroll: the shops are closing, but the restaurants are full, and the lighting creates an atmosphere that few cities in the world can match.

A table at one of the restaurants on Rue du Sault-au-Matelot. A glass of wine. The conversation picks up where it left off, without urgency, without phones. That's Friday night in Quebec City.

Saturday morning: Carrera Café first

Saturday morning belongs to Carrera Café. Wake up without an alarm. Walk down to Petit Champlain. The street is still quiet, tourists haven't yet invaded the sidewalks.

A table on the terrace when the season permits. A double espresso and a latte. Pastries from Boulangerie Borderon et Fils. And that morning conversation, the most honest of the week, the one we never have in the city because we're always in a hurry.

Carrera Café is more than just a cafe. It's a starting point. From the terrace, you can watch the neighborhood wake up. You observe the first passers-by, the delivery people, the bakers. The city has a different texture at that time. More real. Less performed.

Afternoon in Old Quebec

After coffee, the day is open. Here are some suggestions for a relaxed Saturday:

  • Plains of Abraham: a walk or bike ride, with breathtaking views of the river.
  • Saint-Jean-Baptiste district: independent boutiques, galleries, neighborhood cafes.
  • Dufferin Terrace promenade: under Château Frontenac, facing the St. Lawrence.
  • National Museum of Fine Arts: for art lovers, a leading collection.

Sunday at a slow pace

Sunday is lived differently. No schedule. Just the present. A late brunch. A last coffee at Carrera Café before hitting the road again. The return to Trois-Rivières is always a little regretful, with the desire to plan the next getaway already in mind.

And that's exactly the feeling we're looking for: to come back with the desire to return.

The weekend logbook

  • Departure: Friday 5:30 p.m. from Trois-Rivières. A-40 East then A-20.
  • Suggested accommodation: Old Quebec, within walking distance of Petit Champlain.
  • Morning coffee: Carrera Café, 52 rue du Petit Champlain.
  • Return: Sunday afternoon. Allow 2 hours drive.
  • Budget: Weekend for two in intermediate accommodation, meals and coffees.
