GETAWAYS AND RESORTS · FROM TROIS-RIVIÈRES
Romantic weekend in Quebec City from Trois-Rivières
April 2026 · 6 min read · Carrera Café · Season: all seasons
Two hours. That’s what separates Trois-Rivières from Old Quebec. Close enough to leave Friday night after work. Far enough to really feel somewhere else. This romantic weekend, we know it by heart. And we never get tired of it.
The secret: don’t plan everything. Let the city set the pace.
Departure from Trois-Rivières
Highway 40 East, then 20, then the bridge. Leaving at 5:30 PM on a Friday, you arrive in Quebec City before 8 PM. With a bit of luck and little traffic, sometimes before 7:30 PM.
The city lights up just at the right moment. The lights of Château Frontenac reflect in the river. The terraces start to fill up. The weekend starts exactly as it should.
Friday night in Quebec City
Settle into your accommodation, change, and walk down to Old Quebec. The Petit Champlain district is perfect for an evening stroll: shops close, but restaurants are full, and the lighting creates an atmosphere few cities in the world can match.
A table in one of the restaurants on Sault-au-Matelot street. A glass of wine. The conversation picks up where it left off, without urgency, without phones. That's Friday night in Quebec City.
Saturday morning: Carrera Café first
Saturday morning belongs to Carrera Café. Wake up without an alarm. Walk down to Petit Champlain. The street is still quiet, tourists haven't yet invaded the sidewalks.
A terrace table when the season allows it. A double espresso and a latte. Pastries from Boulangerie Borderon et Fils. And that morning conversation, the most honest of the week, the one you never have in the city because you're always in a hurry.
Carrera Café is more than a café. It’s a starting point. From the terrace, you see the neighborhood waking up. You watch the first passersby, the delivery people, the bakers. The city has a different texture at this hour. More real. Less performed.
Afternoon in Old Quebec
After coffee, the day is open. Here are some suggestions for a stress-free Saturday:
- The Plains of Abraham: a walk or bike ride with a breathtaking view of the river.
- The Saint-Jean-Baptiste neighborhood: independent shops, galleries, neighborhood cafés.
- The Terrasse Dufferin promenade: under the Château Frontenac, facing the Saint Lawrence.
- The National Museum of Fine Arts: for art lovers, a top-tier collection.
Sunday at a slow pace
Sunday is experienced differently. No schedule. Just the present. A late brunch. One last coffee at Carrera Café before hitting the road again. The return to Trois-Rivières is always a bit reluctant, already wanting to plan the next getaway.
And that’s exactly the feeling we’re after: coming back with the desire to return.
