Office Coffee
Home coffee is your territory. Office coffee is a race on an unknown track. Sometimes poor tap water, limited equipment, lack of time. But with the right strategies, you can drink very well even on the 14th floor of an office tower.
The nomad coffee kit
You don’t need to carry a professional coffee maker. Just the right tools.
The travel version of the classic AeroPress. Compact, lightweight, with an integrated cup. It brews in 2 minutes, fits in a backpack, and cleans in 30 seconds. The perfect tool for the demanding professional.
The grinder makes all the difference. Freshly ground coffee beans at the office will be infinitely better than pre-ground coffee. Quality manual grinders (Timemore, Comandante, 1Zpresso) fit in a pocket.
Optional but transformative. A compact kitchen scale allows precise dosing of coffee and water. Precision is the difference between an okay coffee and an outstanding one. Timemore or Felicita scales weigh less than 200g.
Office water
Good water makes as much difference as the coffee itself. And it's often the most overlooked factor.
The ideal water for coffee contains between 75 and 175 ppm of total minerals. Too little: the water "steals" the coffee's aromas. Too much: it creates astringency and scale.
Slightly mineralized water (Evian, Volvic, Laurentides) is ideal. Avoid very hard waters like Perrier or Contrex for coffee.
A filtered pitcher reduces chlorine and softens the water. This is often enough to significantly improve office coffee.
The office kettle is often too hot (100°C). Let it rest for 30 seconds after boiling to reach the ideal 92-94°C.
5 rules for perfect office coffee
Five habits that change everything.
Office coffee is almost always old and poorly stored. Bring your own beans in a small airtight container. Even 15g for one cup makes all the difference.
60 seconds of manual grinding. This small action doubles the perceived quality in the cup. The aroma released while grinding is already a pleasure in itself.
A cold cup immediately lowers the coffee temperature by 5 to 8°C. Rinse your cup with hot water before brewing. The result stays hot longer.
Microwaved coffee is wasted coffee. If you don't have time to drink your coffee hot, prepare it as a cold concentrate or accept room temperature.
Rancid coffee residues spoil the oil and affect every following cup. Rinse with hot water after each use. Clean thoroughly once a week.
