Quebec Winter Carnival: how to enjoy it from Petit-Champlain
April 2026 · 7 min read · Carrera Café · Quebec to Experience
The Quebec Winter Carnival — the largest winter carnival in the world — transforms the Old Capital into a festive and colorful stage every February, despite temperatures that scare off the less daring. Parades, ice sculptures, slides, and Bonhomme Carnaval greeting the crowds: the event is one of a kind. And to enjoy it from Petit-Champlain, there is no better neighborhood base.
Petit-Champlain during the Carnival
During the two weeks of the Carnival, Petit-Champlain is adorned with winter decorations that further enhance its natural charm. The ice sculptures illuminated at night, the snow-covered facades of colorful houses, and the lively visitors from around the world make it one of the most beautiful settings of the festival. It is also one of the quietest places to rest between activities — the narrow alleys naturally filter the large crowds that flood the plains and the Dufferin Terrace.
Several activities take place directly in the neighborhood or just a few minutes' walk away: the ice palace in the lower town, sled rides along the river, and street performances that enliven the main streets. The funicular operates in enhanced mode during the period to facilitate travel between the upper and lower towns.
Must-Do Activities
The Carnaval parade is the central event: illuminated floats parade through the night accompanied by brass bands and costumed characters. It draws tens of thousands of spectators, so plan to arrive early to find a good spot along the route. The Dufferin Terrace slides are open to everyone: sliding down these long ice tracks with a view of the Saint Lawrence River under the floodlights is an unforgettable memory.
Ice canoeing on the Saint Lawrence is a more athletic but equally memorable activity. Teams of five push and carry their canoe across the river’s ice in a thrilling race. Watching from the banks is an experience few events in the world can offer.
Warming up at Carrera Café
After a morning outside at -15°C, nothing beats a break in a cozy café. Carrera Café, located in Old Québec just steps from Petit-Champlain, is the ideal place to warm up, defrost your fingers, and regain strength before heading back out on your adventure. A hot flat white or a strong cortado in a welcoming setting — it’s the perfect break in the heart of the Carnaval.
CARNAVAL BREAK AT CARRERA CAFÉ
Between two Carnaval activities, warm up at Carrera Café with a carefully prepared specialty coffee. The must-visit spot in Old Québec during the big winter festival.
