Quebec Carnival: Surviving the Cold in Style

The Quebec Carnival is the largest winter carnival in the world. Two weeks of festivities in sometimes Siberian cold. Carrera Cafe is your warm refuge, your thermal pit stop, your headquarters in Petit-Champlain.

The largest winter carnival in the world

Since 1894 (with interruptions), the Quebec Carnival has transformed the city into a unique winter playground.

Every year in February, Quebec hosts between 400,000 and 600,000 visitors for the Carnival. Temperatures that can drop to -30 degrees Celsius, monumental ice sculptures, canoe races on the frozen Saint Lawrence River: the Carnival is a celebration of winter like nowhere else on the planet.

The symbol of the Carnival is Bonhomme, a giant snow figure whose silhouette is known throughout the province. The Plains of Abraham, Old Quebec, and Petit-Champlain transform into a scene of festivities for two entire weeks.

For visitors discovering Quebec for the first time in winter, the Carnival is a positive culture shock. Quebeckers don't endure winter: they celebrate it. This philosophy can be felt on every street corner, and of course, in the atmosphere of Carrera Cafe in February.

★ Dates and Info

The Carnival usually takes place during the last week of January and the first two weeks of February. Check the exact dates each year on the official Quebec Carnival website. Petit-Champlain is at the heart of the action.

The Carnival's thermal pit stop

After an hour outside at -20 degrees, Carrera Cafe becomes the most precious refuge in Petit-Champlain.

Carnival logistics absolutely include heating breaks. No one, not even the hardiest, stays outside for more than two hours without stopping somewhere. Carrera Cafe is the ideal strategic stop: located in the heart of Petit-Champlain, a stone's throw from the main activity sites.

Our team knows the Carnival rhythm. In February, we adapt our service to welcome visitors quickly, warm them efficiently, and send them back on the circuit in top form. The perfect pit stop, just like in Formula 1.

Our baristas' clothing guide

Our teams have survived dozens of Carnivals. Here are their tips for staying stylish even at -25 degrees.

★ Essential
The Three-Layer Rule

Thermal underwear, insulating mid-layer (wool or down), waterproof windbreaker jacket. This basic rule applies in Quebec as it does at the North Pole. Never go out without all three layers active.

Extremities
Head, Hands, Feet: The Priority

Body heat is mainly lost through the head and extremities. Warm tuque (beanie), thermal mittens or gloves, winter boots insulated down to -40. Cold feet ruin an entire day.

★ Carnival Evening at Carrera Cafe

A private evening at the bar during Carnival: unlimited mulled wine, seasonal platters, exclusive ambiance away from the crowd. By reservation only, very limited spaces in February.

❖ Carnival Brunch (weekends only)

On Saturday and Sunday of the Carnival, a special brunch with warm focaccia, seasonal cheeses, mulled wine or latte, full platter. The ideal start before facing the day.

❖ Group Package (10 people and more)

Personalized group menus, dedicated service, semi-private space. Ideal for groups visiting Quebec for the Carnival. Mandatory reservation 48 hours in advance.

The Carnival spirit
❖ Barista's Tip

The secret of the Carnival is to accept the cold rather than fight it. Dress properly, plan your heating breaks, and let the atmosphere carry you. A mulled wine at Carrera Cafe after an hour on the ice: it's one of the most delicious moments of winter in Quebec. The contrast between the cold outside and the warmth inside is an experience in itself.
