Formula 1 and Coffee: Why the two worlds are more alike than you think

April 2026 · 6 min read · Carrera Café · The Coffee Journal

Two worlds. One shared obsession with precision.

At first glance, a barista and a Formula 1 engineer don't have much in common. One works in a kitchen, the other in a paddock garage. However, if you take the time to look closely at these two disciplines, you discover a striking resemblance: the same quest for perfection, the same attention to detail, the same culture of performance.

It is precisely this intersection that Carrera Café celebrates every day, in its space in Petit Champlain, Quebec City.

Precision above all else

In Formula 1, a pit stop averages two seconds. Every action is repeated thousands of times to achieve perfect execution. The margin of error is non-existent. The outcome of the race can be decided by a few thousandths of a second.

In specialty coffee, it's the same rigor. Water temperature must be maintained between 90 and 96 degrees Celsius. The ideal espresso extraction pressure is between 25 and 30 seconds. One gram of coffee too much, one second too long, and the whole cup changes. The barista, like the driver, cannot afford approximation.

The obsession with the bean and the engine

In Formula 1, teams analyze every component of the engine. Engineers work with tolerances of a few microns. Every part is designed, tested, rejected, and improved in a permanent quest for marginal performance. Data from every lap, every corner, is analyzed to improve.

Continuous excellence: a shared culture

Specialty coffee shops work in the same way. Menus change with the seasons and new available origins. Extraction protocols are regularly re-evaluated. Barista training never stops. At Carrera Café, we share this philosophy: what was perfect yesterday can still be improved tomorrow.

A passion that transcends borders

Formula 1 is one of the few truly global sports. It brings together enthusiasts from Monaco to Melbourne, from Montreal to Monza. Specialty coffee follows the same global movement: from Tokyo to London, from New York to Paris, lovers of a good cup recognize the same codes, the same values, the same high standards.

At Carrera Café, we welcome Formula 1 enthusiasts from all over the world. They find here a space where their two passions finally come together under one roof.
