Visiting Petit-Champlain with children: our tips for a successful outing

Petit-Champlain is often presented as an adult neighborhood — shops, gourmet restaurants, historic architecture. But it’s also a place that fascinates children: the funicular, the cobblestone streets that look like a fairy tale setting, ice cream vendors in summer, Christmas decorations in winter. Here’s how to enjoy it with your family without stress.

The funicular: the number one attraction for little ones

For children, the first attraction of Petit-Champlain is neither a shop nor a restaurant — it’s the funicular. This cabin that goes up and down between the upper and lower town fascinates children of all ages. The view that gradually opens up over Petit-Champlain during the descent is enough to provoke exclamations of delight. Plan to ride it several times — it’s often the number one request when returning to the car.

The funicular operates from 7:30 AM to 11 PM during the season. For strollers, the cabin is accessible — just fold the stroller for the bulkiest models, or use the stairs next to it for older children.

Activities suitable for children

Besides the funicular, Petit-Champlain offers several family-friendly activities. Nearby, Rue du Trésor features artists who create portraits and landscapes on demand — a great opportunity to order a unique family portrait as a keepsake. The neighborhood shops sell toys and local crafts that curious children will love.

In summer, street performances in the Old Port attract families with entertainment, acrobats, and musicians. In winter, the Dufferin Terrace slides, the Carnival ice sculptures, and the light decorations turn the neighborhood into a magical place for little amazed eyes.

Where to eat with children in the neighborhood

Petit-Champlain is well equipped for family meals. Several creperies, pizzerias, and local cuisine restaurants offer child-friendly menus with high chairs available. The Old Port Market, just a few minutes' walk away, is ideal for a quick break with a wide variety of food options.

For parents' coffee breaks, Carrera Café is nearby and warmly welcomes families. While adults enjoy a well-pulled espresso, children can watch the street activity through the café's large windows.
