Île d'Orléans:
Quebec's granary

Just a few kilometers from Old Quebec, Île d'Orléans is another world. Flowering orchards, vineyards on the river, cheesemakers, and local artisans: an escape that nourishes the soul as much as the body.

The Island Tour
The Farmer's Route

The Farmer's Route is a 67 km road that circles Île d'Orléans, passing by local producers, artisans, and shops.

Île d'Orléans is connected to the city of Quebec by a suspension bridge, but it feels like another world. The 67 km Farmer's Route allows you to discover the island's six parishes, each with its own unique personality: Saint-Pierre, Sainte-Famille, Saint-François, Saint-Jean, Saint-Laurent, and Sainte-Pétronille.

Along the route, strawberry stands by the roadside in July, apple orchards in September, vineyards with river views in summer, cheesemakers, artisanal bakeries, sugar shacks in spring. The island is a living calendar of Quebec flavors.

The view of the Saint Lawrence is ever-present: you can see Quebec from the shore, the Laurentians to the north, the Appalachians to the south. The island is listed as a heritage site by the Quebec Council of Monuments and Sites, a recognition that reflects the remarkable preservation of its historic agricultural landscape.

The Orchards of the Island
Apples and berries

The orchards of Île d'Orléans are among the oldest in Quebec. Their apples, strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries enrich the region's markets.

★ Strawberries

Strawberry stands

In July, strawberry stands take over the roadsides of Île d'Orléans. Fresh wild strawberries, artisanal jams, farm pies and desserts: a must-stop for any visitor to Quebec in the summer season. The island's strawberries have a legendary reputation.

In September and October, the island's orchards welcome family pickings. Cortland, McIntosh, Lobo, Empire: the varieties follow one another throughout autumn, accompanied by craft ciders and freshly baked apple pies.

The Artisans
Other island addresses

Beyond strawberries and blackcurrants, Île d'Orléans is full of artisans, small producers, and remarkable gourmet addresses.

Bouchard Bakery in Sainte-Famille is an institution: sourdough bread, brioches, baguettes, and wood-fired pastries, all made in a heritage house. Island bread is a treat that Quebec residents often go out of their way to buy.

The island's vineyards, like the Sainte-Petronille Vineyard, produce white and rosé wines suited to the northern climate, with freshness and acidity that make them natural pairings with the region's cheeses and seafood.

Maple is also an island crop: sugar shacks open their doors in spring, offering the traditional Quebec outdoor feast: eggs in syrup, pork rinds, pea soup, and sugar pie.

★ The island-coffee pairing

The island's flavors in your cup

After the Farmer's Circuit, the island's flavors accompany you to Carrera Cafe. Monna's blackcurrant jams pair perfectly with our Charlevoix cheese cheesecake. And if you brought back a bottle of blackcurrant cremant from the island, know that a ristretto espresso with a few drops of blackcurrant is one of the most surprising pairings you can experience.
