Drip Coffee Guide
Make your cup like a barista
At home · Technique & Precision
Home drip coffee is like Formula 3 before F1. You learn the basics, calibrate your approach, understand the variables. And one day, you make a cup that takes your breath away.
Before starting
The minimum equipment
You don’t need a lab. But three tools make the difference between average and excellence.
A precision scale
0.1g precision. Coffee is a matter of ratio. 1:15 is your starting point.
A burr grinder
The grind evens out extraction. A blade grinder destroys aromas.
A thermometer
Between 92°C and 96°C. Too hot burns. Too cold under-extracts.
A gooseneck kettle
To control the pour rate. Precision is in the hand.

The 4 steps
Pre-infusion (0:00–0:45) — Pour 40 ml. Let the coffee bloom for 45 seconds. This is the bloom: CO2 escapes, aromas open up.
First pour (0:45–1:30) — Pour up to 150 ml in concentric spirals. Slowly. You’re feeding the coffee, not drowning it.
Second pour (1:30–2:15) — Fill to 300 ml. Same motion. Same rhythm.
Final drip (2:15–3:00) — Let it drain. The cup is ready when the coffee bed is flat and even. That's your checkered flag.
Adjustment
Read your cup and adjust
In F1, after each lap, the engineer adjusts the car. In coffee, it’s the same. Your cup tells you what’s wrong.
Too acidic? Too light?
Under-extraction. Grind finer or increase the temperature or time.
Bitter? Astringent?
Over-extraction. Grind coarser or lower the temperature. Less coffee.
Our suggestion
Which coffee to start with?
To learn filter coffee, choose a coffee with fruity and bright notes. Mistakes are more audible, successes more striking.
Our Filter Discovery Box contains three coffees from Brûlerie Rousseau selected for this purpose. Ideal for practicing and comparing.
