THE ORIGIN OF BEANS: WHY IT CHANGES EVERYTHING
April 2026 · 5 min read · Carrera Café · The Coffee Journal
Latin America dominates global production. Brazil is the top producer and offers generally smooth, low-acid coffees with notes of hazelnut and milk chocolate, perfect for espressos and blends. But the origin of a coffee bean determines much more than its flavor profile: it tells a story, a terroir, a craft. This is why the origin of beans fundamentally changes what’s in your cup.
Latin America: sweetness and balance
Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Ethiopia (yes, technically African but greatly influencing the global market) are benchmarks. Brazil produces smooth beans with notes of hazelnut and chocolate. Colombia offers fruitier, slightly acidic profiles with distinctive floral aromas. Costa Rica is known for its clean and balanced coffees. Each terroir, each altitude, each processing method yields a unique result.
East Africa: complexity and fruitiness
Ethiopia is often considered the birthplace of coffee. Its beans, with ancestral varieties preserved in natural forests, offer unmatched aromatic complexity: notes of flowers, red berries, citrus, sometimes wine. Kenya produces bright and lively coffees, with a sharp acidity that can recall blackcurrant or grapefruit. These East African coffees are often used as single origins by specialty coffee shops.
Pacific Asia: body and depth
Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi: Pacific Asia coffees are characterized by a full body, earthy and woody notes, sometimes low acidity with herbal aromas. This profile makes these coffees excellent candidates for espresso blends seeking depth and mouthfeel. Moka Peru and Timor-Leste beans add an exotic dimension to the range.
Our selection at Carrera Café
At Carrera Café, the selection of origins is a thoughtful decision. We look for beans that tell a story, that have a distinctive character, that come from producers committed to quality and sustainable practices. Our baristas know the story behind each bean and can explain why we chose a particular origin for a specific coffee. This traceability is at the heart of our approach.
