National Park of the
Jacques-Cartier
Just 40 minutes from Quebec, the Jacques-Cartier valley offers one of the most beautiful nature immersions in the province. Hiking, kayaking, wildlife observation: an exceptional natural circuit.
On the Program
The Jacques-Cartier valley is a spectacular glacial scar in the Laurentian plateau, a landscape that looks borrowed from Scandinavia.
Jacques-Cartier National Park covers 670 km2 of boreal forest and glacial valleys in the heart of the Laurentians. Only 40 kilometers from Quebec, it offers wild nature of untouched beauty, accessible in less than an hour from Old Quebec.
The Jacques-Cartier valley is the jewel of the park: a deep valley carved by glaciers, with steep walls plunging toward the turquoise river. From the perched viewpoints, you take in a panorama that seems to belong to another era, before human presence.
In autumn, the colors of the boreal forest transform the valley into a living painting: the oranges, reds, and yellows of the deciduous trees contrast with the dark green of the spruces. It is one of the most beautiful experiences of the Indian summer in Quebec.
Jacques-Cartier National Park
670 km2 of boreal forest, turquoise river, glacial valleys, and exceptional panoramas just 40 minutes from Quebec.
The park offers over 100 km of marked trails for all levels, from family walks to challenging ascents.
Wolf Trail
One of the park's most popular trails: a climb to the viewpoints overlooking the valley, with spectacular views of the Jacques-Cartier River. Ideal for intermediate hikers seeking panoramas.
Valley Trails
The valley cross-country trails along the river are perfect for families and beginners. Children will find natural sandy beaches, wading areas, and picnic spots by the water. An ideal setting for a full day with the family.
The Jacques-Cartier River is one of the best kayaking and canoeing rivers in Quebec, from calm sections to technical rapids.
River kayaking
Jacques-Cartier offers kayak sections for all levels. Beginners can rent equipment and kayaks at the park service center. Experts face class II and III rapids in the upper part of the river. A sliding experience on water of absolute clarity.
The park is an exceptional habitat for wildlife: moose, forest caribou, beavers, golden eagles, and wolves inhabit these forests.
Jacques-Cartier Park is home to one of the most accessible populations of forest caribou in Quebec. These iconic taiga animals can be seen on the high-altitude trails, especially in spring and autumn. Moose are also common in the valley's marshy areas.
Birds of prey nest in the valley cliffs: golden eagles, great horned owls, and red-tailed hawks establish their territory there. For birdwatchers, Jacques-Cartier is an exceptional observation route, enriched by the diversity of forest habitats.
The river is home to brook trout and brown trout. Trout fishing is a popular activity in the park, subject to strict regulations that ensure the health of fish populations in these preserved waters.
