Montcalm neighborhood
and Grande-Allée
Between the ramparts and the Plains of Abraham, the Montcalm neighborhood and Grande-Allée form Quebec’s avenue of pleasures: lively terraces, concert halls, museums, and prestigious restaurants.
On the program
Grande-Allée is Quebec’s festive and gastronomic axis: European-style terraces, historic breweries, and signature restaurants.
Grande-Allée stretches from Porte Saint-Louis to the Plains of Abraham like a Parisian boulevard stranded in America. Its terraces, lively from spring until the first snow, are the stage for Quebec social life: victories are celebrated, defeats digested, and the world remade.
In summer, the terraces of Pub Saint-Alexandre, d'Arcy McGee's, and nearby breweries overflow onto the sidewalk. It’s where Quebec shows its most festive face, where languages mingle, and where time slows down in the evening.
Grande-Allée also hosts serious gastronomic addresses, from chef bistros to classic table d'hôte, not forgetting neighborhood cafes that connect the upper town and residential Montcalm.
Pub Saint-Alexandre
One of the finest beer addresses in North America: hundreds of beers from around the world, a sumptuous Edwardian decor, and a unique atmosphere that blends cultures in a timeless space.
Palais Montcalm is the main concert and performance hall of the neighborhood, an essential cultural landmark of Quebec.
Palais Montcalm
The Raoul-Jobin hall of Palais Montcalm hosts concerts, recitals, and shows in a classic and intimate setting. The cultural agenda is rich, from classical music to jazz and emerging artists. A must for those who love live arts in Quebec.
Grand Theatre of Quebec
Le Grand Theatre is the major house for symphonic music and performing arts in the capital. The Quebec Symphony Orchestra, Theatre du Trident productions, and major international tours stop here. A cultural as well as architectural landmark.
The Montcalm neighborhood has top spots, from chef bistros to lively summer terraces.
The Continental
Founded in 1956 on Saint-Louis Street, this institution of Quebecois gastronomy carries on a classic know-how with tableside flambés, game specialties, and an exemplary wine cellar. A meal at Continental is a lesson in gastronomic history.
Terraces of Grande-Allée
The terraces of Grande-Allée are a unique phenomenon: dozens of terraces side by side, animated by summer music, jubilant crowds, and sunsets over the Plains. An authentic, festive, and irreplaceable Quebecois experience.
Just steps from Grande-Allée, the Plains of Abraham offer an exceptional breathing space in the heart of the city.
The Plains of Abraham are the lungs of Quebec: 100 hectares of greenery between the historic city and the Saint Lawrence River. In summer, people picnic, bike, and attend outdoor concerts during major events like the Summer Festival. In winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing take place here.
It was on these plains in 1759 that the battle that changed the fate of North America took place. The Plains of Abraham Museum brilliantly tells this story, while the surrounding fortifications remind of the unique strategic character of this site.
The MNBAQ is also integrated here, making the Plains complex an exceptional cultural hub where history, nature, and art coexist harmoniously.
The Starting Espresso
Before a concert at Palais Montcalm or an evening on the terraces of Grande-Allée, a stop at Carrera Cafe in Petit-Champlain is a must. The Testa Rossa espresso is your premium fuel: dense, expressive, with that theatrical touch that sets the mood for a great night. Just like a parade lap before the start of a Grand Prix.
Before or after an evening in Montcalm, Carrera Cafe welcomes you for an espresso, a platter, or a drink. The Quebecois art of living in an Italian setting.
