Québec in spring: the return of the terrace and the first warm days

Spring in Québec: a wait that’s worth it

There is something unique about the arrival of spring in Québec. After months of winter with no half-measures, the first days of warmth have a special flavor. The sky clears. Terraces reappear. People walk more slowly through the streets of Old Québec, as if to let time pass over them.

Petit Champlain is transforming. This neighborhood, which was white and muffled during winter, regains its colors. The stones of the century-old walls dry out. Shops reopen their doors onto the cobblestone streets. And cafés bring their chairs back outside to welcome the first brave souls who want to sit on the terrace with a hot coffee still in hand.

The Carrera Café terrace: a long-awaited return

At Carrera Café, the opening of the terrace marks the start of a new season. It’s a moment our regulars look forward to. It’s not just about the temperature. It’s the return of a certain way of experiencing coffee: outside, in the open air, with the street bustling around you, the sound of footsteps on the cobblestones, and sometimes, if you’re lucky, a ray of sunshine arriving at just the right angle.

Spring is also the season of transitions when it comes to drinks. We start to leave behind heavy hot lattes in favor of lighter coffees. Iced espresso begins to make an appearance. The strong, hot cortado remains perfect for still chilly mornings. And as soon as temperatures rise, cold brew joins the conversation.

What to do in Petit Champlain in spring?

The neighborhood rediscovers itself in spring. Tourists begin to arrive, but still in reasonable numbers. It’s the best time to walk the streets of Petit Champlain without jostling, to take time to look at the facades, enter artisan shops, stop at the foot of Château Frontenac, and contemplate the river that, too, is slowly waking up.

The funicular is back in service if it wasn’t already. The Dufferin terrace welcomes its Sunday morning strollers again. The Old Port market begins to come alive. And the neighborhood’s restaurants resume their seasonal menus with Quebec products just starting to appear.

For a simple itinerary: start with a coffee and a croissant on the terrace at Petit Champlain, then go up to the Upper Town by funicular, stroll around Château Frontenac, then go down the Breakneck Stairs before finishing with a board or an espresso in the late afternoon.

Spring on our menu

The return of spring is also an opportunity to evolve what we offer. Cold drinks return to the menu. Seasonal blends celebrating the flavors of renewal make their appearance. We adapt our offerings to what the season calls for: lightness, freshness, but with the care and precision that define Carrera Café in every season.

If you come to visit Quebec in spring, count on Petit Champlain as your anchor point. This is where the city is most beautiful as it wakes up. And this is where you'll find a coffee worth stopping for.

Come enjoy spring at Carrera Café
