Quebec City in spring: the return of terraces and the first mild days

Spring in Quebec City: a well-deserved wait
There's something unique about the arrival of spring in Quebec City. After months of winter that know no half measures, the first mild days have a special flavor. The sky brightens. Terraces reappear. People walk slower in the streets of Old Quebec, as if to let time wash over them.
Petit Champlain transforms. This district, which was white and hushed during winter, regains its colors. The stones of the century-old walls dry out. Businesses reopen their doors onto the cobblestone streets. And cafes put their chairs back outside to welcome the first brave souls who want to sit on a terrace with a warm coffee still in their hands.
Carrera Café's terrace: an anticipated return
At Carrera Café, the opening of the terrace marks the beginning of a new season. It's a moment our regulars look forward to. It's not just about the temperature. It's the return of a certain way of experiencing coffee: outdoors, in the fresh air, with the street bustling around you, the sound of footsteps on the cobblestones, and sometimes, if you're lucky, a ray of sunshine hitting just right.
Spring is also the season for beverage transitions. We start to abandon heavy hot lattes in favor of slightly lighter coffees. Iced espresso begins to make its appearance. The short, hot cortado remains perfect for still-chilly mornings. And as soon as temperatures rise, cold brew enters the conversation.
What to do in Petit Champlain in spring?
The district rediscovers itself in spring. Tourists begin to arrive, but in still reasonable numbers. It's the best time to walk the streets of Petit Champlain without jostling, to take the time to look at the facades, to enter the artisan shops, to stop at the foot of Château Frontenac and contemplate the river, which is also slowly waking up.
The funicular is back in service if it wasn't already. Dufferin Terrace welcomes back its Sunday morning strollers. The Old Port market begins to liven up. And the district's restaurants resume their seasonal menus with Quebec products that are just starting to emerge.
For a simple itinerary: start with a coffee and a croissant on a terrace in Petit Champlain, then go up to the Upper Town by funicular, stroll around Château Frontenac, then descend via the Breakneck Stairs before finishing with a platter or an espresso in the late afternoon.
Spring on our menu
The return of spring is also an opportunity to evolve our offerings. Cold drinks regain their place on the menu. Seasonal blends that celebrate the flavors of renewal make their appearance. We adapt our offerings to what the season calls for: lightness, freshness, but with the care and precision that define Carrera Café in all seasons.
If you visit Quebec City in spring, count on Petit Champlain as your anchor point. This is where the city is most beautiful when it awakens. And this is where you'll find a coffee worth your stop.
