What to do in Quebec on a Saturday: route from Petit Champlain

April 2025 · 7 min read · Carrera Cafe · Season: spring

Saturday in Quebec starts gently. The alleys of Old Quebec are still quiet, and it’s the ideal time to set off on foot from Petit Champlain and discover the neighborhood at your own pace.

MORNING: COFFEE AND PLACE ROYALE

Start with an espresso or a latte at Carrera Cafe before setting off to explore. Place Royale, just a few steps away, is especially beautiful in the morning when tourist groups have not yet arrived. The stone facades, the relative silence, the morning light on the cobblestones: this is Quebec in its purest state.

From Place Royale, head up towards rue du Petit Champlain. The shops only open at 10 a.m., which gives you time to stroll without pressure. Stop to look at the shop windows, note what interests you for the return.

MORNING: SHOPS AND ALLEYS

Once the shops open, Petit Champlain becomes a discovery trail. Local crafts, jewelry, clothing, bookstores: the neighborhood concentrates what Quebec has most unique in terms of independent commerce. Take the time to go in, to chat with the owners. They are often the ones who will give you the best addresses for what comes next.

Ursulines Alley and the passage to the Royal Battery are worth a detour. These pedestrian shortcuts are part of the neighborhood's charm and offer unexpected views of the river and stone rooftops.

NOON: TERRACE AND BOARDS

For lunch, return to Carrera Cafe. The Saturday noon terrace is an open-air theater: families, couples, passing tourists, and neighborhood regulars naturally mingle. Order a Quebec cheese board or a plate of local charcuterie. Take your time. Saturday is not meant for rushing.

AFTERNOON: TOWARDS THE UPPER TOWN

After the meal, take the funicular to the Upper Town. Château Frontenac, Dufferin Terrace, the Plains of Abraham: the afternoon is perfect for these larger spaces that require walking and open skies. If the weather allows, the Plains in the late afternoon are one of the most beautiful spots in the city.

Head back down to Old Quebec at the end of the day via the Faubourg stairs or the Côte de la Montagne. The late afternoon light on the Lower Town rooftops alone is worth the trip.

START AND END HERE
