What to do in Quebec City on a Saturday: Route from Petit Champlain

April 2025 · 7 min read · Carrera Cafe · Season: Spring

Saturday in Quebec City starts gently. The alleys of Old Quebec are still quiet, and it's the ideal time to set out on foot from Petit Champlain and discover the district at your own pace.

MORNING: COFFEE AND PLACE ROYALE

Start with an espresso or a latte at Carrera Cafe before heading out to explore. Place Royale, just a short walk away, is particularly beautiful in the morning before tourist groups arrive. The stone facades, the relative silence, the morning light on the cobblestones: this is Quebec City in its purest state.

From Place Royale, head back up towards Rue du Petit Champlain. Shops don't open until 10 AM, giving you time to stroll without pressure. Stop to look at the storefronts, note what interests you for your return.

LATE MORNING: BOUTIQUES AND ALLEYS

Once the shops open, Petit Champlain becomes a journey of discovery. Local crafts, jewelry, clothing, bookstores: the district concentrates what Quebec City has most unique in terms of independent commerce. Take the time to step inside, chat with the owners. They are often the ones who will give you the best addresses for later.

Rue des Ursulines and the passage to the Royal Battery are worth a detour. These pedestrian shortcuts are part of the district's charm and offer unexpected views of the river and the stone rooftops.

LUNCHTIME: TERRACE AND PLATTERS

For lunch, head back to Carrera Cafe. The Saturday midday terrace is an open-air theater: families, couples, passing tourists, and neighborhood regulars mingle naturally. Order a platter of Quebec cheeses or a plate of local charcuterie. Take your time. Saturday is not a day to rush.

AFTERNOON: TOWARDS THE UPPER TOWN

After lunch, take the funicular to Upper Town. Chateau Frontenac, Dufferin Terrace, Plains of Abraham: the afternoon is ideal for these larger spaces that require walking and open skies. If the weather permits, the Plains in the late afternoon are one of the most beautiful places in the city.

Descend back to Old Quebec at the end of the day via the Faubourg stairs or the Montagne hill. The late afternoon light on the rooftops of Lower Town is worth the trip alone.

START AND END HERE
