The best home espresso machines in 2025
April 2025 · 8 min read · Carrera Cafe · Season: All Seasons
The heart of your morning ritual. Choosing a home espresso machine is a decision that impacts years of coffee. Here's our guide to finding the one that truly matches your profile and skill level.
THE THREE TYPES OF MACHINES
There are three main families of home espresso machines. Capsule machines are the simplest: they produce a decent, consistent espresso effortlessly, but they limit your options and their long-term cost is high. Semi-automatic machines require more involvement: you dose, tamp, and manage the extraction. They allow you to learn and improve. Automatic machines are in between: they grind, dose, and extract automatically, but often allow you to adjust certain parameters.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR BEFORE BUYING
The machine's pressure is the first criterion: an espresso is made at 9 bars. Be wary of machines that advertise 15 or 19 bars: this is often marketing. The actual extraction pressure is what matters, and it must be regulated. The heating system is the second important criterion: dual-boiler machines allow you to make espresso and steam milk simultaneously without waiting. Single-boiler machines require a waiting period between extraction and steaming.
The grinder is often underestimated: having a good grinder is more important than having a good machine. Freshly ground coffee makes all the difference. If your budget is limited, invest in a quality grinder rather than a high-end machine with pre-ground coffee.
OUR SELECTION BY LEVEL
For beginners: a machine with an integrated grinder in the $300-500 range. It simplifies preparation and allows you to understand the basics without too many variables. For intermediates: a semi-automatic machine with a separate conical burr grinder, in the $500-1000 range. This is the investment that truly allows you to progress. For experienced enthusiasts: a dual-boiler machine with PID for temperature control, paired with a precision grinder.
LEARN WITH A BARISTA
The best way to learn how to extract a good espresso at home is to start by understanding what a good espresso is. Come to Carrera Cafe to observe our baristas at work. Ask them questions about dosing, grind, pressure, and extraction. They will be happy to share what they know. This is often the best education before investing in your own equipment.
