The best espresso coffee machines for home in 2025

The heart of your morning ritual. Choosing an espresso machine for home is a decision that commits you to several years of coffee. Here is our guide to find the one that really matches your profile and level.

THE THREE TYPES OF MACHINES

There are three main families of espresso machines for home use. Capsule machines are the simplest: they produce a decent and consistent espresso effortlessly, but they limit your options and their long-term cost is high. Semi-automatic machines require more involvement: you dose, you tamp, you manage the extraction. They allow you to learn and improve. Automatic machines are between the two: they brush, dose, and extract automatically, but often let you adjust some settings.

WHAT TO LOOK AT BEFORE BUYING

The machine pressure is the first criterion: an espresso is made at 9 bars. Beware of machines that display 15 or 19 bars: it's often marketing. The actual extraction pressure is what matters, and it must be regulated. The heating system is the second important criterion: dual boiler machines allow you to make espresso and steam milk at the same time without waiting. Single boiler machines require a waiting time between extraction and steaming.

The grinder is often underestimated: having a good grinder is more important than having a good machine. Freshly ground coffee makes all the difference. If your budget is limited, invest in a quality grinder rather than a high-end machine with pre-ground coffee.

OUR SELECTION BY LEVEL

For beginners: a machine with an integrated grinder in the $300-500 range. It simplifies preparation and helps understand the basics without too many variables. For intermediates: a semi-automatic machine with a separate conical burr grinder, in the $500-1000 range. This is the investment that really allows you to progress. For advanced enthusiasts: a double boiler machine with PID to control temperature, paired with a precision grinder.

LEARN WITH A BARISTA

The best way to learn how to pull a good espresso at home is to start by understanding what a good espresso is. Come to Carrera Cafe to watch our baristas at work. Ask them questions about dosing, grinding, pressure, and extraction. They will be happy to share what they know. It’s often the best education before investing in your own equipment.
