Departure: train or car?

The choice of transportation divides Montrealers who make the trip regularly. The Via Rail train is comfortable, allows you to work or rest during the trip, and drops you off directly in downtown Quebec. For a car-free day, it’s clearly the ideal option. The first morning departure from Central Station gets you to Quebec before 9 AM, leaving the whole day ahead of you.

The car offers more flexibility. Highway 20 (south shore) is generally faster than 40, and the Pierre-Laporte Bridge brings you into Quebec through the Upper Town, with a first view of the river that's already worth the detour.

The morning: exploring Old Quebec in depth

Arrive in Old Quebec between 9:00 and 9:30 AM and start with the Upper Town. The Citadel and the city walls deserve an hour of your visit. Then head down to the Dufferin Terrace, stop in front of Château Frontenac, and take the funicular down to the Lower Town.

Petit-Champlain in the morning, before the midday tourist rush, is a rare pleasure. Shops open gradually, terraces are still quiet. Plan an hour to stroll before heading to Carrera Café for your morning coffee break.
