Beginner’s guide to Formula 1: understand everything in one read

April 2026 · 9 min read · Carrera Café · Season: spring

Formula 1 can seem intimidating at first glance — technical acronyms, tire strategies, construction points. But once the basics are understood, it’s one of the most fascinating sports in the world. Here’s everything you need to know to start truly enjoying it.

The format of a race weekend

A Grand Prix takes place over three days. Friday is dedicated to free practice, where teams test their setups and gather data. Saturday's qualifying determines the starting grid — starting position is crucial because overtaking in F1 is difficult. Sunday is race day: between 50 and 70 laps depending on the circuits, with pit stop strategies that can change everything.

Essential rules to know

In F1, points are awarded to the top ten (25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1), with a bonus point for the fastest lap in the race. There are two parallel championships: the drivers' championship and the constructors' championship. Tires play a central strategic role — each car must use at least two different compounds per race in dry conditions.

The technology that makes F1 unique

F1 single-seaters are rolling laboratories. Current hybrid power units combine a 1.6L turbo internal combustion engine with several energy recovery systems. Ground effect, DRS systems, real-time sensors — every technical detail has a purpose and a direct impact on track performance.
