Amateur Barista Guide. The bean is king, but equipment is its throne. Here’s what really changes.
WHY EQUIPMENT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE
You often hear that the bean is the only thing that matters. That’s partly true: a mediocre bean will remain mediocre no matter the equipment. But an excellent bean poorly prepared will never reach its full potential. Equipment is what allows you to extract the best from a great coffee. And for the amateur barista, a few well-chosen investments radically change the quality of the daily cup.
THE GRINDER: THE MOST IMPORTANT TOOL
If you only invest in one tool, choose a good grinder. Consistent grind size is fundamental for uniform extraction. A quality conical burr grinder produces homogeneous particles, which directly translates into the cup. Options for an amateur barista: Baratza Encore, Timemore C2, or Kingrinder K2.
SCALE AND KETTLE: PRECISION AT THE SERVICE OF COFFEE
The precision scale is the tool of serious baristas. Weighing doses to the gram allows you to reproduce exactly the same extraction every day. The gooseneck kettle with temperature control is also essential for filter methods. It allows precise pouring and optimal temperature control between 88 and 96 degrees depending on the coffee.
