STARTING POINT: THE DUFFERIN TERRACE

The Petit Champlain district isn’t large. You can cross it from end to end in ten minutes if you walk fast. But no one should walk fast in Petit Champlain. It’s a place made for slowing down, noticing details, stopping. Here’s our favorite route, with worthwhile breaks, must-see viewpoints, and of course, the must-stop coffee spot.

Start at the top. The Dufferin Terrace runs along the Château Frontenac on the cliff overlooking the Saint Lawrence. The view here is one of the most photographed in Canada, and for good reason. Take the time to walk the entire length of the terrace before heading down.

DESCENT VIA THE CASSE-COU STAIRCASE

The Casse-Cou Staircase is Quebec’s most famous staircase. It has connected the Upper Town to the Lower Town since the 17th century, and its name says everything you need to know about the slope. On the way down, stop halfway for a magnificent view of the Petit Champlain rooftops, then continue to Petit-Champlain Street.

The street is narrow, cobblestone, lined with colorful houses. In summer, flowers overflow from window boxes. In winter, the lights create a fairytale atmosphere. It’s one of the most beautiful pedestrian streets in the country.

THE MUST-STOP COFFEE SPOT

PLACE ROYALE AND RETURN

Continuing toward the river, you arrive at Place Royale — the cradle of French civilization in North America. The Notre-Dame-des-Victoires church, 17th-century houses, cobblestones reflecting the morning light: it’s one of the most historically rich places in Quebec. Take the time to sit on the church steps and watch the square come alive.
