What to do in Québec in winter: experiences and must-sees

Carnival, skiing, snowshoeing, winter gastronomy: everything to do in Québec in winter. A complete guide for Montrealers who want to enjoy the cold season in the Old Capital.

Québec in winter is a city that embraces the season rather than endures it. Where other cities close their terraces and wait for spring, Québec sets up its skating rinks, installs its slides, lights up its alleys, and opens its doors wide. It is one of the few cities in North America where winter is experienced as a celebration rather than a punishment.

The Québec Winter Carnival

The Québec Winter Carnival is one of the largest winter festivals in the world, held every year in February. Bonhomme Carnaval, the canoe race on the Saint Lawrence, the slides on the Plains of Abraham, the ice palace — the program is full and festive. To fully enjoy it, arrive Friday evening and leave Sunday. The city is at its best during these two days: restaurants are fully booked, the streets of Old Québec are crowded, and the atmosphere is unmatched.

Skiing and the mountains 20 minutes away

Québec has the unique advantage of having ski resorts less than 30 minutes from downtown. Mont-Sainte-Anne, Stoneham, and Le Massif de Charlevoix are accessible without a car from the center. Le Massif, in particular, offers a unique experience: the slopes descend toward the Saint Lawrence River, creating views that few resorts in the world can match. For winter hiking enthusiasts, snowshoeing on the Plains of Abraham or in urban parks is a gentler but equally beautiful alternative.

Winter gastronomy

Québec winter has its own culinary delights. The sugar shack, of course, which starts in March — but also raclette, fondue, root vegetable soups, ice ciders, and mulled wines in Old Québec’s restaurants. The Old Port market stays open in winter and offers exceptional local products. And of course, starting each day with a good hot coffee at Carrera Café remains one of the best winter rituals in Petit Champlain.

Petit Champlain under the snow

The Petit Champlain neighborhood may be even more beautiful in winter than in summer. Snow-covered cobblestone alleys, illuminated facades, decorated shops, and restaurants radiating warmth through their windows — it’s a living postcard scene. That’s where Carrera Café is located, becoming a perfect refuge in winter between outings in the cold. A hot espresso, hands warmed around a cup, the view of the snowy alley — hard to ask for more.

YOUR WARM BREAK IN THE HEART OF WINTER

Carrera Café welcomes you in Petit Champlain every day during winter. Espresso, hot coffee, mulled wines, and platters — the ideal break between two winter adventures.
