Montrealer in Québec: the perfect weekend guide (without being a tourist)

April 2026 · 7 min read · Carrera Café · Québec to experience

Are you coming from Montreal and planning a weekend in Québec? Discover our practical guide to enjoy the city like a local: neighborhoods to explore, specialty coffee at Carrera Café, restaurants, activities, and local tips.

The typical tourist reflex in Québec is to head straight to Château Frontenac, tour Old Québec, and come back with a few magnets. That's fine. But it doesn't really reflect how locals live their city. Here's how to spend a weekend in Québec like someone who lives there — or almost.

Friday evening: arrive and settle in

Leave Montreal late in the afternoon to avoid traffic on Highway 20. Upon arrival in Québec, settle into an Airbnb in Saint-Roch or Saint-Jean-Baptiste rather than Old Québec — you'll be better placed to explore the city's real neighborhoods. For Friday dinner, Saint-Roch offers one of the city's best creative restaurant scenes.

Saturday morning: coffee at Petit Champlain

Start Saturday with a coffee at the Carrera Café in Petit Champlain. Arrive early (before 9 a.m.) to have the neighborhood almost to yourself. An espresso or a flat white with a croissant, sitting on the terrace if the weather allows — it’s the best possible start to the day in this city. Then, stroll through the alleys of Petit Champlain and Old Québec before the tourist groups arrive. The morning light on the stone facades is different from the afternoon light.

Saturday afternoon: the local neighborhoods

Limoilou is the neighborhood to explore to understand the real life of Québec today. Its alleys, its small independent cafés, its Saturday public market, and its local shops will give you a picture of the city that few visitors discover. In the evening, return to Saint-Jean-Baptiste for the bars and restaurants on Grande Allée or Saint-Jean Street.

Sunday: slow morning and return

Sunday morning in Québec is one of the best times of the week. Slow pace, few people, different light. Stop by the Carrera Café for one last coffee before hitting the road. If you like markets, the Old Port market is open Sunday morning and offers exceptional local products. Head back to Montreal with some Carrera coffee beans in your luggage — to extend the experience at home.

YOUR WEEKEND STARTS IN PETIT CHAMPLAIN

The Carrera Café awaits you every day in the most beautiful neighborhood of Québec. Espresso, flat white, boards — the best starting point to explore the city.
