FILTER COFFEE: V60, CHEMEX, AND AEROPRESS

Complete beginner’s guide. Three methods, three profiles. Learn to choose the one that fits your ritual.

WHY FILTER COFFEE IS A REVELATION

Filter coffee, long overlooked in favor of espresso, is now experiencing a remarkable revival. These slow infusion methods highlight the aromatic complexity of specialty beans like no other technique can. The fruity, floral, and tangy notes of a good Ethiopian or quality Colombian fully reveal themselves in a well-made filter cup.

The V60, Chemex, and Aeropress are the three reference methods to enter the world of specialty filter coffee. Each has its personality, advantages, and unique cup profile.

THE V60: CLARITY AND ELEGANCE

The Hario V60 is the barista’s reference tool. Its conical shape and spiral ribs allow for a regular and controlled flow. It produces a cup of great clarity, where the delicate aromas of the bean fully express themselves. Recommended ratio: 15g of coffee for 250ml of water at 93°C. The grind should be medium-fine and consistent.

THE CHEMEX AND THE AEROPRESS: TWO CHARACTERS

The Chemex, with its thick paper filters, produces an even cleaner and brighter cup than the V60. Its larger size makes it ideal for preparing several cups at once. The Aeropress, on the other hand, is a versatile and forgiving tool that produces a more concentrated and rounded coffee, with slight pressure. Perfect for those who like to experiment.

THE BEANS THAT MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

To fully enjoy these methods, the choice of bean is crucial. Prefer specialty coffees roasted light or medium, which retain their original aromas. African origins like Ethiopia and Kenya offer beautiful fruity and floral profiles in filter coffee. At Carrera Café, our whole bean selections are specially chosen to excel in these methods.
